Welcome to Orfeo documentation!

ORFEO (Open Research Facility for Epigenomics and Other) is a modern data center hosted in a container within the AREA Science Park Basovizza campus.

The ORFEO design is centered on high-performance computing (HPC) and can provide over 25 million hours of calculation per year. AI is not out of scope in ORFEO: thanks to the presence of eight NVIDIA Tesla V100, two NVIDIA DGX systems with eight A100 each (1 TiB of RAM per node), and three servers each with eight NVIDIA H100 80 GB GPUs, it delivers state-of-the-art performance in both inference and training tasks.

All this computational power is available to students, startups and partner institutions' researchers focusing on Life Sciences and Innovative Materials, as well as small and medium enterprises. Access is granted thanks to the 10 Gbit/s connection to AREA’s main router and from there through the LightNet research and educational network or secondary ISP. A skilled team of professionals with expertise in HPC, Linux system administration, and network operations manages the services at the community's disposal, promptly addressing any issues or emergencies; services include IaaS, PaaS and SaaS environments, a Kubernetes-based cloud partition, FAIR-aligned Ceph storage and long-term archival.
